What Is Estim Therapy?
As we mentioned, E Stim Therapy is the practice of using electrical muscle stimulation like TENS and EMS to both treat aching muscles and help stimulate muscles to promote strengthening. E Stim is commonly used when you experience chronic pain, sports injuries, or simply want to treat sore and stiff muscles after a hard workout.
What Are the Different Kinds of E-Stim?
There are two main types of E Stim therapies, TENS and EMS. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) – is used to treat chronic and acute pain by placing electrode pads near the source of the pain. Signals are sent through the pads and into your body where they disrupt pain signals. This feels like a sharp vibration mimics pain signals. Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) – uses a stronger electrical signal that causes your muscles to contract. These repetitive contractions cause your muscles to strengthen with use. EMS is generally used for workouts rather than for pain management.
What Conditions Can You Treat With TENS?
Common treatments that TENS therapy is used to treat include: • Back pain (sciatica) • Fibromyalgia • Joint pains • Ligament / Meniscus pain • Inflammation • Muscle injury and pain TENS treatment is incredibly beneficial when used regularly and efficiently. Personally, I have used TENS therapy for both post-op physical therapy after a serious ACL injury and even just at the office while I sit at my desk to ease the discomfort of sitting all day. TENS therapy is very versatile and can be used almost anywhere!
